The main objective of INASOOP is to develop Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) applicable to SMEs in the sectors of olive oil and table olives, and to provide a tool (an Expert System) which will help the SMEs to comply with the Standards. In addition, training activities will be carried out among the staff of the IAGs and among several SMEs, with the aim of disseminating the new EQS and other results of the project. With these aims, the proposed project will comprise the following six work packages:

WP 1 aims to compile all the relevant information which will allow to define the problem (the environmental impact of olive oils and table olives production), its economic and social framework (structure of the sector, economic relevance, etc) , the technological alternatives, the legislative constraints, etc. In addition, and with the aim of achieving a closer look to particular cases, Case Studies will be carried out for the olive mills involved in the project and possibly other ones identified by the associations.

WP 2 will allow to develop the main deliverable of the project, the proposed Environmental Quality Standards for olive oil and table olives production. The development of the standards will be based in international norms (ISO 14024) and other existing environmental standards, and will be an iterative process with successive consultation with third parties (authorities, consumer groups, environmental associations, etc).

WP 3 aims to develop the Expert System which will facilitate the compliance with the Standards by the olive mills and table olives manufacturers. In order to develop the Expert System, some guidelines will be developed from the case studies and then extended to broader groups of olive mills and table olives manufacturers.

WP 4 intends to establish the basis for the dissemination and exploitation of the results of the project, and to provide training to the staff of the associations and to the SMEs in the consortium regarding the implementation on of the EQS. The results will be an initial dissemination of the results of the project and an increase in the technological level of both the IAGs and the SMEs in the addressed sectors.

WP 5 pursues to define the implementation and management of the developed EQS and other results of this project and in particular the possibility of reviewing and updating them in order to keep in pace with changes in legislation, new technologies, etc. In addition, it will be necessary to define a financing system for the management of the EQS, the implementation of an auditing system, etc.
In order to achieve a successful management of the project, and taken into account its considerable dimension (three years duration and 21 partners), an additional management work package has been included (WP6).
