UNAPATROLUNAPROL (Unione Nazionale tra le Associazioni di Produttori di Olive) was created in 1966. It is the largest organisation of Italian olive oil producers and unites about 700.000 olive growers and millers from 71 territorial associations. UNAPROL is a private organisation recognised by public law. Its institutional objectives are to represent theolive oil producers and promote the high quality olive oil consumption. Through its commercial office and the brand Oliveti d'Italia, UNAPROL commercialises its associates products around the world. UNAPROL takes part in various projects and initiatives to valorise the high quality olive oils and the origin labelled product. It plays also an active role in diverse instances where quality standards are defined and the olive oil system is studied, for example, the International Olive Oil Council (IOC), the Consiglio Nazionale di Ricerca (CNR), the Ministry for Agriculture, the Agecontrol, the Consorzio per l'Extra Vergine di Qualità, the Frantoiani Oleari Riuniti (FOR), the FEDERDOP, among others.

CCAECCAE (Confederación de Cooperativas Agrarias de España) is the organization which officially represents most of the Spanish agricultural cooperatives, with more than 3000 members. One of the most important sectors in the CCAE is that of olive growing and olive oil production and commercialisation: nowadays 837 cooperatives in the olive oil sector are associated to the CCAE, of which 757 perform milling activities and which are responsible for 66% of the Spanish production of olive oil. CCAE is represented in different Spanish institutions, councils and committees, and at international level, in the International Olive Council and in the Permanent Committees of the EU for olive oil. The aims of CCAE are:
  • To collaborate in the configuration and implementation of policies affecting cooperativism and agriculture, frequently in cooperation with other organisations, either Spanish or international.
  • To promote entrepreneurial and commercial initiatives
  • To represent and defend the Spanish agricultural cooperatives
  • To support agricultural cooperatives in the fields of management, coordination, formation, and to foster their modernisation.
  • To perform studies, audits, assessments and analysis

SELE (Greek Olive Oil League) was established in 1995 was founded in 1995, and represents owners of olive mills all over Greece, which produce more than 71% of olive oil at national level. Among the objectives of SELE, the following can be mentioned:
  • The study, support and contribution in the development of the matters that concern the production, storage, sale etc. of the olive oil
  • The promotion of the members rights
  • The representation of the league's members in front of any local or foreign authority, including the authorized bodies of the European Union.
  • The follow up, study, research, projection & support inside the country and abroad, for the issues of this sector as well as the participation and cooperation with local and foreign organizations, that share the same aims as the league.
In the development of its aims, SELE enjoys an excellent cooperation with Greek Ministry of Agriculture.

CEPAALCEPAAL (Centro de Estudos e Promoção do Azeite do Alentejo) was created in 1999 with the aim of putting together the resources of different organizations related to olive oil production and commercialisation in the Alentejan region in Portugal in order to reach the following objectives:

  • To promote the overall development of olive oil cooperatives
  • To reinforce and qualify the oliviculture sector.
  • To launch innovative pilot measures in order promote the expansion and modernization of the sector.
  • To promote the development of a culture of meeting market demands, adapting and qualifying the offer

  • To promote the qualification of the human resources and of the management procedures
  • To support the improvements in competitiveness in the global market
  • To care about the preservation of the historic, cultural and environmental heritage of the region.
CEEPAL is a non-profit association integrated by both public and private organizations, including olive mills cooperatives, authorities and education centers, and has an active policy of co-operation with other institutions both within Portugal and abroad in order to better address its aims.

AOMO (Association of Olive Mill Owners) was founded in 1978 and consist of 140 members. Most of the mills are family enterprises. 98% of the extraction systems are 3-phase, and the rest are 2-phases and classical type systems. The number of persons who involved in oil production is about two or three workers and one technician per mill. AOMO will be in support of SELE in the olive oil sector in Greece.

PEMETE (Panhellenic Association of Table Olives Processors, Packers and Exporters) was founded to support table olives at both National and International level. In particular, the aims of the Association can be summarised as follows:
  • The promotion and the protection of the exports of table olives world-wide.
  • The protection of economic and other interests from the processing and packing of table olives.
  • The representation of the branch in every public authority, organisation as well as in various committees of the European Union.
  • Information dissemination, mainly through bulletins, concerning the cultivation of the product, with primary target the quality and commercial improvement of table olives.
  • Mediatory activities between its members and foreign importing and exporting companies.
The members of PEMETE can be any legal person provided that they are engaged in processing, packing and exporting table olives. An important prerequisite is the devotion to the product and the faith in the aims of the association.

The basic means for the implementation of the aims of the association are: (a) The regular briefing of the members through regularly printed forms, publications of articles and interviews, not only in branch editions but also in mass media. This guarantees the direct information of the wider public and the producers concerning the progress of table olive industry, (b) participation in International Exhibitions aiming at the representation of the branch and its members, and (c) participation and presentations in conferences and branch meetings.

PEZA UNIONThe Agrarian Union of Peza (PEZA) is a co-operative located in the village of Peza (Crete) since 1933 which processes 80-85% of the agricultural production of the area and produces fine wines and virgin oils. The Agrarian Union of Peza has been certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and applies the HACCP system. Its products can be found all over Greece and abroad (Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa).

Juan del Pozo Sánchez S.A (POZO) is a family-owned business established in 1929 in Extremadura, one of the most important olive oil producing regions in Spain. The company, with 50 employees carries out different activities, olive mill, ‘alperujo’ drying, animal feed production, etc. The company has an innovative profile that led them to participate in a European project some years ago (CR178091/BRE21551, see Annex, section 3).

The Agricultural Association Agio Apostolon Vion (VION) is an agricultural co-operative for olive oil production and processing located in Lakonia, Greece, constituted by 475 members. The agricultural co-operative owns large experiences in olive oil production and olive mill management.

SABINA AgricolaSABINA Agricola is a co-operative that exists since 1968 and gathers 120 olive producers from the Province of Rieti in the highlands of Rome. The business activities are the olive oil mill and the product commercialisation. The olive oil is sold bulk and bottled to different clients in Italy from Rome to the north. The co-operative is participating in a research project for quality assurance with the CNR research institute and has modified its infrastructure with an EU programme in order to adapt to the new requirements.

Frantoio Oleario Zamporlini is a family property since 1942. involved in the production and commercialisation of olive oil. The mill has a working area of 2.400m2 and the transportation, elaboration and storage processes are completely automatic. The commercial activity is developed mainly through salesmen in the biggest cities in the north and the centre of Italy, as well as in London. The mill’s modern facilities have been visited by several research groups and the owners have been invited to present their experience and give advice to new mills in Italy and abroad.

FicalhoSociedade de Producao e Comercialicao de Azeites de Ficalho (FICALHO) is a small olive mill located in the Alentejo region in Portugal. The mill employs two permanent workers produces about 450 tonnes of olive oil by the 2-phases method.

ILIAKO REWMAILIAKO REWMA is a Greek company established in 1998. The main activity sector is the planning and installation of renewable energy systems and specially solar and wind power generators. A big number of these system for the home sector (island systems) have been installed. Now begins the installation of a wind park with 4,6 MW, grid connected. The equipment for these systems is imported from Germany and Denmark. In addition to this, ILIAKO REWMA performed as a subcontractor in an European research project called COOP. ILIAKO is currently involved in the CRAFT project SOLARDIST, which intends to develop a solar distillation system for the detoxification of OMW.

In the last years STAB is also committed with the environmental problems associated to olive oil production and has even participated in European research projects on this field.

AQUATEC.3WAQUATEC 3W is a German environmental services company which has specialised itself in solutions for the waste and wastewater management from olive processing since 1997. With an active research policy, with the support of the EC (LIFE99/ENV/D/000424) the company has successfully carried out the implementation of a demonstration plant in Greece with great success. The plant, which performs a physical-biological treatment of OMW works faultlessly on the process since the season 1999/2000. The plant was completed by a module to produce fertilizer in 2002. Aquatec has also developed a technology concept to treat table olive wastewaters (TOW). TTZ BremerhavenTTZ Bremerhaven is a technology transfer centre associated to the University of Bremerhaven (North of Germany) specialised in the fields of food technology, environment and energy. The ISEThe ISE (Istituto Sperimentale per la Elaiotecnica), sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, provides support for the olive oil industry both within and outside Italy. Its aim is to support the Italian olives and olive oil industry, thanks to more than thirty years of experience in both chemical and technological aspects. ISE consists of three departments, an official analysis laboratory and a NMR laboratory. Whereas the Oil Chemistry Department is focused in the development of methodologies able to define the olive oil quality (in fact, it played a key role in developing sensory methodologies on virgin olive oil, actually included in EU regulations), the Elaiotecnica Department is mainly oriented to technological aspects and interested to the optimisation of the oil extraction systems in relation to the achievement of both the highest yields and the better oil quality, and the The Table Olive Department is directed to the identification of olive tree cultivars suitable to be processed as table olives, to the study and development of innovative processing technologies and to researches on physico-chemical properties related to the sensory characteristics of processed fruits. The Istituto participates in research projects with other many Italian and international Centres, Universities, Organisations and Research Institutions, such as COI and UE.

NAGREFNAGREF (National Agricultural Research Foundation) is the national body for agricultural research and technology in Greece functioning independently under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. As the main agricultural research foundation in the country, NAGREF contributes to the (i) the production of innovative knowledge and technology, (ii) the demonstration of research results and (iii) dissemination, application and exploitation of research results. NAGREF comprises more than 25 institutes and research stations, of which two will participate in INASOOP: the Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products (ITAP) and the Institute of Olive Tree and Subtropical Plants of Chania (SPOT). Whereas the ITAP focuses on the utilization and management of agricultural wastes and by-products (including olive oil wastes), SPOT has more than 30 years experience in the olive sector, and even has at its disposal an experimental olive oil factory with the three systems existing nowadays.
